UK's giant panda may have lost unborn cub

Edinburgh Zoo says it's likely the UK's only female giant panda is no longer pregnant.

Keepers say Tian Tian has passed her due date and hormone analysis suggests that she may have lost her baby.

"There is still a chance she will give birth to a live cub as her progesterone levels have not yet returned to normal," says Iain Valentine, director of giant pandas for the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland.

"At the end of last week there were one or two results from the hormone tests that were atypical and that was the first sign something might be amiss."

Many thought it could be third-time lucky for the panda, who was artificially inseminated after she failed to mate with her male companion.

She became pregnant last year also after artificial insemination, but appeared to have suffered a miscarriage late term.

Giant pandas have difficulty breeding and their pregnancies are notoriously difficult to follow.
