Alien Weaponry performs 'Kai Tangata' at 2018 VNZMAs

Kiwi thrash metal band Alien Weaponry has kicked off the 2018 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards (VNZMAs) with a bang.

The Waipu group, which sings in Te Reo Māori, peformed 'Kai Tangata' as the opening performance of the biggest night of the year for Aotearoa music.

Alien Weaponry are nominated for several awards at the ceremony, including Album of the Year, Best Group and Best Rock Artist.

In a 2016 interview with The Hui, drummer Henry de Jong said the band's music "is very focused on whakapapa and what's happened to our family in the past".

Earlier this year, Alien Weaponry signed with Austrian-based Napalm Records, the label of notable internation lmetal acts including Satyricon, The Sword, Hammerfall and Cavalera Conspiracy. 

"We fit within their whanau, but we're also doing something different, introducing our own language and style," de Jong said at the time.

Other performers at the 2018 VNZMAs include Six60, Drax Project, Robinson, Jess B, Sons of Zion and Che Fu.
