'Meghan Markle being vilified, like Diana was' - George Clooney

George Clooney has grimly suggested that media treatment of Meghan Markle may ultimately kill her.

The From Dusk Til Dawn star says it's a case of "history repeating itself" as the former Suits star is "vilified and chased", like Princess Diana was before her.

Prince Harry's mother had a famously difficult relationship with tabloid media and died in a 1997 car accident while trying to escape paparazzi.

"They're just chasing Meghan Markle everywhere, she's been pursued and vilified," George said at recent promotional event, according to the UK's Press Association (PA) news agency.

"I can't tell you how frustrating it is to see that.

"She's a woman who is seven months pregnant and she is being pursued and vilified and chased in the same way that Diana was, and it's history repeating itself. And we've seen how that ends."

Meghan's troubled relationship with her family has been intensely reported on by media and George took aim at coverage of a recent letter she sent her father, Thomas Markle.

"You're taking a letter from a daughter to a father and broadcasting it everywhere... She's getting a raw deal there, it's irresponsible," PA reports he said.

In 2016, Prince Harry issued a rare statement requesting restraint from the media in reporting on his then-girlfriend, saying she'd been subjected to "a wave of abuse and harassment".
