Review: The new Batman film is the darkest knight yet

The Batman has arrived in cinemas across the globe and fans of the caped crusader are welcoming him with open arms.

It's raining in Gotham, it's raining a lot. The city has descended into grimy, brutal anarchy - and even the good guys are going bad.

Fighting in the trenches and pulling no punches, it's The Batman.

Under writer/director Matt Reeves, our new Batman is the darkest knight yet perfectly suited to the times and Robert Pattinson perfectly suited to the suit.

There is a Riddler in town, and the body count grows along with the clues and the taunts.

The Batman trusts no one but will work with what he's got - the faithful Jim Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) and the cat.

Zoe Kravitz flexes her feline to perfection. Her Selina Kyle has just the right edge, her own agenda and the cat and the bat have just the right kind of energy.

Colin Farrell lurks unrecognizably on the fringes here as Falcone's head henchman Oz. Yet to fully flourish into our feathered fan favourite Penguin, his slowly percolating plotline is a hefty hint of things to come.

The twists and turns, the grim Fincher feel, the growling bruised Batman and the sadistic Riddler, this big-screen blockbuster is heavy-duty and for Bat-fans with a big appetite.

Turns out I'm that kind of Bat-fan.

Four-and-a-half stars.
