Bluebird customers upset after chip-making machine change

Bluebird's chips have taken a dip with New Zealanders - and no it's not the famous Kiwi onion kind.

Kiwis are noticing their chippies just aren't chipping like they used to, and the reason is a new machine at Bluebird's factory.

But it's unclear if the chippy maker is any closer to finding a solution since customers shared their disappointment earlier in the year.

"We can confirm we have kept the same recipe! However, we want to be honest with you, we had to updated [sic] our machines which has had an impact on some of your beloved favourites," Bluebird replied to comments on a Facebook post in January.

"We are aware of this issue and are working with our team to find a solution. We can't wait to bring you the chips you know and love. We will keep you and the rest of NZ updated."

So, has it found that solution?

Bluebird NZ's owner PepsiCo told Newshub it upgraded some equipment, but now believes they've got it right.

"Two years ago we upgraded the equipment we use to produce some of our products - including Rashuns, Twisties, Burger Rings and Cheezels. This was done to ensure we could continue to manufacture these brands in New Zealand and employ locally," the statement said.

"When we initially upgraded the equipment we did notice some changes to the appearance of these products however we are confident that we are now meeting expectations on quality given the very minimal volume of feedback we receive from consumers directly."

Customers haven't held back their feelings, though.

"There is no way you kept the same recipe for the Burger Rings, they are nothing like they use to be," one person wrote back on Facebook.

"What have you done to the Burger Rings, I couldn't even finish the bag. My partner even screwed his face up when he tried them didn't eat anymore. They are smaller, harder and do not taste what Burger Rings of old taste like - never buying again… So disappointed in Bluebird," another said.

It wasn't just Burger Rings though.

"Whatever you did to CHEEZELS - you killed them," a commenter said. "They are nothing like the usual [favourite] cheezels... boo."
