Family of dead pregnant Wellington woman believe she may have been murdered

The family of a pregnant Wellington woman who was found dead on Wednesday believe she may have been murdered.

Sonam Shelar went missing on Saturday, only days after having an ultrasound that didn't confirm her baby was the boy she had dreamed of.

Formal identification of the body found in the Wairarapa on Wednesday has not taken place, but police believe it to be Ms Shelar.

While investigations are still on-going, Ms Shelar's family in India believe the 26-year-old may have been murdered, reports NZME.

"It might be a murder, that is what I'm saying, that is what her family thinks, especially her mother," said family spokesman Harshal Patkar.

The family is also reportedly positive that Ms Shelar's disappointing ultrasound results didn't lead her to harm herself. Her husband, Sagar Shelar, had previously said that after the ultrasound his wife had been crying and upset "because she wanted a boy".

"This thing which is going on in the news that she was upset because she wanted a baby boy, this news is not right, it is not true," Mr Patkar said.

"She wanted a baby boy but she was never upset about having a baby girl."

As part of their investigations, police searched Ms Shelar's house on Wednesday. Mr Shelar told Stuff he knew police would be looking into his actions.

"I know that I'm their first suspect, but I know that I haven't done anything wrong."

Mr Patkar said the family was making arrangements to fly to New Zealand.
