Frightening near miss as car swerves onto the wrong side of State Highway 1

A frightening near-miss caught on camera on State Highway 1 has left a Tauranga mother shaken.

Kaysi Fredericks' dashcam captured the moment a black SUV drifts over the centre line to drive on the wrong side of the road near an intersection.

She was driving back from Waikato Hospital to Tauranga on Monday after visiting her son.

Shortly after 5.30pm she was approaching the Piarere turnoff towards SH29 when the vehicle in front of her swerved into the far right side of the road, and into the path of oncoming traffic, narrowly missing a car in its path.

Ms Fredericks says that the incident was "just totally out of the blue, I'd been following him for a while and there was just no warning he was going to do this. I just immediately thought there was going to be a crash".

She told Newshub that "he eventually drifted back over to the right side of the road, but there was just no urgency at all".

The dangerous driving occurred just hours after eight people were hospitalised in two separate crashes on the highway between Hamilton and Tauranga.

Ms Fredericks said she heard about the two accidents prior and was just "glad that there wasn't another one, especially because of the ute that pulls out in front of him. It could have been a three-car crash."

She immediately pulled over to report the incident to police, saying she told them the severity of the event.

"He wasn't overtaking anyone, and he wasn't just a little bit over, he was totally over the line, and that intersection is just notorious for accidents".

"I've come across quite a few crashes but this is the worst driving I've ever seen".
