One of New Zealand's best-known scientists has been targeted by two of our dumbest criminals.

Nanotechnologist and science educator Dr Michelle Dickinson's work has been left "really stuffed" after two people broke into her Auckland office early on Saturday morning and stole important property.

Security camera footage shows the pair, who hadn't bothered to disguise their faces, caught in the act.

"Last night this couple chose to visit our Nanogirl office in Ponsonby and take things important to our work," Dr Dickinson wrote on Twitter.

"As a tiny social enterprise trying to do good in the world, being reunited with our property would be amazing so if you know these people could you ask them to give it back."

Dr Dickinson says the items the criminals took aren't particularly valuable, but their loss has caused a significant delay.

"It’s really stuffed our work today but hoping if we can get our things back then we can at least get back to work next week," she wrote.

The burglary has annoyed Kiwis, who are expressing their anger on social media.

"Great photos. Soon someone will dob the losers into the cops," one person replied.

On Saturday afternoon, police told Newshub that enquiries into the burglary are ongoing.
