Car hits cyclist in Tauranga

A person has been injured in a crash between a car and a cyclist near Tauranga.

Emergency services were called to State Highway 36 near Te Matai road at around 9:30am.

One person has moderate injuries.

Earlier this month, National proposed fining cyclists who don't stick to cycle lanes when they're available, which drew backlash from cycling groups.

"Police have better things to go than hassle people on bikes. They must be rolling their eyes at this misguided idea," said Cycling Action Network spokesperson Patrick Morgan.

According to Cycling Action Network, 16 cyclists have died on New Zealand roads this year.
