Victim's relative felt 'numb' after hearing of Gloriavale teacher's crime

Newshub can finally reveal the identity of a Gloriavale teacher convicted of kissing and touching one of his young pupils.

In March, Just Standfast admitted a charge of performing an indecent act on a child.

He fought all the way to the Court of Appeal to try to keep his name a secret.

A relative told Newshub the offending took place inside the remote West Coast Christian community in 2012.

"He grabbed her and pulled her in and she said he was like kissing her really hard and aggressively and being physical with his hands, like on her bottom and stuff," the relative said.

The 68-year-old was sentenced to community detention in March this year.

Since then he's been fighting to keep his identity secret, but the Court of Appeal has now ruled he can be named

The girl's relative says he'll never forget the day he found out about the offending.

"My initial reaction was disbelief - I didn't believe it. It's sort of like numbing, you feel numb - for me at least, I just can't absorb it all. It takes weeks to filter in."

Standfast will remain the subject of intensive supervision for two years. He's no longer teaching, but Newshub understands he remains part of the Gloriavale community and is now working on one of their farms.
