A truck driver has been seriously injured after colliding with a tractor carrying a colony of bees on Wharepuhunga Road, Waikato

The truck rolled onto its side and the beehives spilled onto the road, police reported.

A diversion is in place at the intersection of Happy Valley Road and Wharepuhunga Road.

Police have requested assistance from the owner of the hives.

This is not the first time bees have been unintentionally released on a Waikato road.

In 2013, a man released a hive of bees when he crashed his truck in Te Poi and died.
