Kiwi Hylton King deported back to New Zealand after 'vicious' attack on an Australian police officer

A New Zealand man convicted in Australia for brutally attacking a police officer has been deported back to NZ.

Twenty-four-year-old Hylton Miharo King was sentenced to 11 months' jail in Brisbane last month after he strangled the officer until she was nearly unconscious when he and his sister, Ariana, were kicked out of a pub for being too drunk and threatening staff.

Hylton told officers to "f**k off" during the May 25 incident, before choking and biting the fingers of the female officer, AAP reported.

Australia Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton said it was a "vicious crime".

"It was a cowardly act, and I think my decision to cancel his visa and deport him from our country reflects the values of most Australians," he told the media on Thursday.

"So I think it's good riddance to him. I'm glad that he's gone and I'm sorry that [the] young police officer will live for the rest of her life scarred with the memory of that incident."

The Brisbane District Court last month heard the officer had suffered mentally since the attack.

"Ninety-nine percent of people who come to our country do the right thing but in this case, clearly he has done the wrong thing and we just don't want people of that very poor character in our country," Dutton said.

Ariana was also sentenced to 9 months' jail and will return to New Zealand on her own accord. The siblings' sentences were wholly suspended for two-and-a-half years.
