Police have launched a homicide investigation after a man died in a house fire last month.

Emergency services were called to the incident on Minerva Terrace in Cockle Bay on October 20.

Wiremu Arapo, 27, died and two others were injured in the fire.

A police spokesperson said a post mortem examination has now led police to treat the matter as suspicious.

"A team of investigators have now been assembled to work on the enquiry," Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Brown said.

The two people who were injured that night have spoken to police as part of the investigation.

"I strongly believe there are people that know what has happened to Mr Arapo and I'm urging them to do the right thing and contact us," Detective Brown said.

Neighbour Michael Rowse said the man was found near a doorway.

"It looked like he was trying to get into the house to get the person out," Michael Rowse said.

"We heard all this popping going on and thought oh someone's letting off some early fireworks."

Police are urging anyone with information to come forward.

"We ask anyone who may have any information or who witnessed suspicious activity on the evening of October 20 to come forward."
