A man has been arrested in a town north of Christchurch in relation to a firearms incident in Motueka on Tuesday.

He was detained safely near Woodend on State Highway 1 following a planned traffic stop this morning.

Nelson Bays commander Paul Borrell said the 33-year-old was a person of interest in relation to the firearms incident, in which a man was injured.

"We very much appreciate the support and assistance from the Motueka and wider Nelson Bays communities. We are very aware of the concern that such incidents cause," Borrell said.

On Wednesday, police launched a manhunt for Jahdai Kennard in relation to the incident. They warned he was dangerous and should not be approached.

It came just a day after emergency services responded to a firearms incident on Fry St, Motueka, in which a man was flown to Nelson Hospital with moderate injuries.

Another man was seen fleeing from the scene in a vehicle.

Nelson Bays area commander Inspector Paul Borrell said it's understood the shooter and victim were known to each other.
