Investigation continuing after man shot dead by police in New Plymouth

An investigation is continuing into the fatal police shooting of a man in New Plymouth overnight.

Officers shot the man while they were "conducting a vehicle stop" on Devon Rd at about 9:30pm on Saturday.

The man was given medical assistance at the scene but suffered critical injuries and died, a police statement said.

In an update early on Sunday afternoon, police provided few details but said the man's next of kin had been notified.

"A post mortem examination will be carried out, at this time we are not in a position to release the name of the man.

"The officers involved are being supported by welfare services and their colleagues."

Police said the incident has been referred to the coroner and the Independent Police Conduct Authority has been notified.
