Two teens have been charged with murder after a man suffered fatal injuries in Beach Haven on Auckland's North Shore.

Police say two youths, aged 17 and 14, were arrested early Saturday morning in the Far North.

"The pair have been remanded in custody and are due to appear in the North Shore Youth Court on Monday 6 March 2023, charged with murder," Detective Inspector Callum McNeill said.

Emergency services were called after a crash at the intersection of Tramway and Beach Haven Rds on Friday night.

Police said it's believed the driver of one car died after they were assaulted by an occupant of the other car.

A witness who returned to the scene on Saturday morning to lay flowers by the road told the NZ Herald he saw two young men attacking a third man.

The witness said they rushed to the man's side and helped other onlookers apply pressure to his wounds.

"I find comfort in hoping that he found comfort that there were people there talking to him... when he passed," he told the NZ Herald.

"I never met the guy, but to be with someone in their last moments like that, that's quite a connection."

Another witness told RNZ it appeared the victim had been stabbed and she was traumatised watching him die.

"It was awful, absolutely awful. This is an amazing community, people look out for each other, so this is pretty blimming shocking."

The alleged offenders fled the scene in black BMW sedan, registration CTC411. Det Inspt McNeill said this was found by Police in Glenfield on Saturday.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward, by calling Police on 105 or filling out a report online at 105.police.govt.nz using 'Update Report' and reference 230303/8841.

"Anyone with CCTV cameras or dash cameras is asked to review their footage and contact Police if it shows the black BMW, registration number CTC411, on or near Tramway Road and Rangatira Road in Beach Haven, and Roberts Road in Glenfield, between 6pm and 9pm, on Friday 3 March," Det Inspt McNeill said.
