A man has been charged after he allegedly assaulted a boy with a wine bottle in an Auckland restaurant.

Police were called to the Inverness Road, Browns Bay restaurant just before 7pm on Sunday, Waitematā East area prevention manager Inspector Todd Moore-Carter said.

The 39-year-old was arrested and charged with injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He was expected to appear in the North Shore District Court on Monday.

Insp Moore-Carter said while the wine bottle didn't break, the boy suffered bruising and has since been medically assessed. He didn't need to be hospitalised.

"I would like to reassure the community that this was an isolated incident, and we continue to encourage them to frequent their local restaurants," Insp Moore-Carter said.

"Police share our community's concern when these sorts of incidents occur and we have no tolerance whatsoever for this sort of violence."

Insp Moore-Carter said there's support available for the boy and his family.
