Man charged with murder after person dies at west Auckland park

A man has been charged with murder after a person died at a west Auckland park overnight.

Police were notified of a man being found unresponsive at the Royal Reserve park in Beauchamp Drive in the Auckland suburb of Massey at around 12:10am on Monday morning.

"Sadly the man was pronounced deceased at the scene," Detective Inspector Aaron Proctor, of Waitematā, said.

A 26-year-old man was arrested on Monday morning and will appear in Waitākere District Court today charged with murder.

"We know this will have been a shock to the community, however, we would like to reassure them this appears to be an isolated incident," Det Insp Proctor said.

Residents in the area will see an increased police presence in the area while officers complete their scene examination, which is expected to be finished on Tuesday.

"This is a tragic incident and we are ensuring there is support in place for those closest to the victim," Det Insp Proctor said.

Police said they're currently not able to release details about the man who has died, but confirmed they will "in due course".

"We are continuing to make enquiries, but also want to encourage anyone with information to get in contact with us. Even the smallest detail could bring justice for the deceased," he said.

Det Insp Proctor said police would like to hear from anyone who was in Royal Reserve park or the wider area, including in and around Reverie Place.

"You can call us via 105 or provide information online at https://www.police.govt.nz/use-105, using Update My Report. Please reference file number 231218/2235.

"Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111. Any further updates will be issued proactively."

Meanwhile, shortly after police descended on the park, officers went to a house on nearby Reverie Place where there was a ruckus among family members.

A Newshub camera operator at the scene described seeing a blonde woman yelling "tell mum I love her" while being handcuffed.

Newshub understands the arrest was not related to the park death.
