In a statement on Tuesday, Detective Inspector Chris Barry, Auckland City CIB, said police are urging those who have any information on Kay-Selwyn's whereabouts to get in touch immediately.

"We are reiterating that Kay-Selwyn is considered dangerous and should not be approached," Det Insp Barry said.

He added the investigation has been progressing on Tuesday.

"We know that the community have several questions about what has occurred in Ponsonby on Sunday evening and we can reassure you police are working tirelessly to give the victim's family answers and to put this man before the court," he said.

"We are reminding any associates of this man that anyone found to be aiding or assisting him to evade police in any way, may be liable to prosecution for being an accessory after the fact."

Det Insp Barry said police are thankful to those who have provided information that helped identify the 31-year-old.

"Police have received a number of calls with information to assist us with obtaining this warrant to arrest."

However, he added police now need help to locate him.

"We continue to ask anyone who has information or footage of the incident to get in touch with us."

The details surrounding the victim are yet to be confirmed while police notify the family, however police "will look to do so in due course".

Kay-Selwyn tried getting inside a bar during the evening of Sunday, May 5, but was denied entry as it was about to close.

Police said he then moved south down Ponsonby Rd and remained in the area before the shooting, which took place just minutes later.

"At around 10:15pm a group of four people, including the victim, exited a parked car on Ponsonby Rd and walked in the man's direction," Det Insp Barry told media on Monday.

Multiple shots were then fired at the victim.

Det Insp Barry said police don't know what the motivation is for the shooting and it was "difficult to say" if it was gang-related.

"The victim and his associates have arrived on Ponsonby Rd. They have exited a vehicle and from there, at this stage, we don't have a motivation."

A body beneath a white sheet was spotted on the pavement on Ponsonby Rd, following the fatal shooting.
