Emiliano Sala death: UK man arrested on suspicion of manslaughter

Dorset police investigating the death of footballer Emiliano Sala have arrested a man on suspicion of manslaughter.

British Premier League club Cardiff City had just signed Sala, 28, for a club record £15 million (NZ$29m), when he and pilot David Ibbotson, 59, were reported missing on a flight to Cardiff on January 21.

The Piper Malibu aircraft was later declared missing over the English Channel, after departing Nantes en-route to Cardiff, crashing in waters north of Guernsey.

The wreckage was discovered on February 3 and the body of the Argentine striker was recovered four days later. Ibbotson's body has not been found.

Dorset Police said officers had made enquiries on behalf of the coroner. Detective Inspector Simon Huxter said they had now concluded criminal activity was involved.

"We have to consider whether there is any evidence of any suspected criminality and as a result of our enquiries, we have today, Wednesday 19 June 2019, arrested a 64-year-old man from the North Yorkshire area on suspicion of manslaughter by an unlawful act.

"He is assisting with our enquiries and has been released from custody under investigation."
