Rugby Championship: All Blacks overwhelm Argentina to remain atop competition table

Stand-in No.8 Luke Jacobson has scored second-half try double to help his All Blacks to a convincing 39-0 victory over Argentina on the Gold Coast.

The result sees New Zealand remain atop the Rugby Championship ladder, with their third bonus-point victory over the competition.

With last year's shock defeat to the Pumas still etched into All Blacks memories, no-one was taking the South Americans lightly this time, despite consecutive defeats to the world champion Springboks already this season.

New Zealand were quickly on top, capitalising on early pressure with a try to Rieko Ioane, as he won the race to a loose ball over the Argentina goal-line.

Beauden Barrett converted, but with halftime in sight, the All Blacks had not added to their scoreline, despite dominating territory and possession.

Twice, the Beauden-Jordie Barrett combination narrowly failed to produce some family magic, with Beauden laying on pinpoint kicks that only just beat Jordie over the deadball line.

But in the five minutes before the break, the NZ side added 15 points, with Beauden Barrett slotting a penalty - consolation for all the pressure they had applied - then tries to Sevu Reece and Dalton Papalii.

Another measure of Argentina's desperate defence was their persistent infringing, which finally reached breaking point after the halftime siren, when flanker Pablo Matera was shown the yellow card on his own line and Papalii was driven over from the ensuing lineout.

With Beauden Barrett again wayward off the tee, brother Jordie was duly handed goalkicking duties and went on to slot four from four for the remainder of the match.

Jacobson was promoted into the starting line-up, when stand-in captain Ardie Savea failed concussion protocols during the week and had his first try six minutes after the restart, after Beauden Barrett sliced through the Argentinian defence and threw an outrageous backhanded pass to his No.8 looming wide.

As substitutions flowed, the All Blacks continued to dominate, with little reward on the scoreboard, with Reece, George Bridge and Ethan Blackadder all crossing the line, but having tries ruled out.

Reece lost the ball while trying to force it, Bridge slid across feet first and let the ball behind him, while Blackadder's effort was ruled a second movement, after he was grounded short.

Eventually, after a series of five-metre scrums that chewed up the Robina Stadium turf, Jacobson charged off the back of another and overpowered his markers for a second try.

Since their upset loss in Sydney last year, the All Blacks have twice held Argentina scoreless - the only two occasions in their rivalry.

The only worrying feature of the performance was the sight of Beauden Barrett icing a niggly calf afterwards, a hint that maybe Damian McKenzie might fill the No.10 jersey for next Saturday's rematch at Brisbane.
