Super Rugby Pacific: Injured duo Akira Ioane, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck both on course for Blues returns

The Blues can look forward to the return of star pair Akira Ioane and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck who are both on track for an imminent comeback to Super Rugby Pacific.

Both players have spent the past few weeks sidelined with injuries and were unavailable for selection for the Blues' round seven clash against Moana Pasifika at Eden Park on Saturday.

Ioane, 26, is yet to feature for the Blues this campaign after suffering an injury before the season had begun when he rolled his ankle in training.

But while the initial prognosis was Ioane would miss a couple of weeks, the All Blacks' loose forward has been given time to slowly build back to full fitness before being thrown into Super Rugby Pacific.

Speaking on Thursday, Blues forwards coach Tom Coventry said his side's clash against Fijian Drua in Melbourne on April 23 looms as a potential return date to see Ioane back on the field.

"We're looking to try and get Aki [Ioane] back for the [Fijian] Drua match when we're away.

"That's going to plan, he's out on the field today with us but there's still a bit of work to go with getting some load through his foot.

"Our physios and medical staff are working really hard with him and Aki's doing everything right.

"Hopefully that goes to plan."

Meanwhile, Blues recruit Tuivasa-Sheck is another eyeing a return after he was ruled out with a shoulder injury after his side's win over the Chiefs.

"Rog is very similar. He's probably a little bit ahead of Aki as far as his return to play goes," Coventry said.

"I saw someone clobbering him with a hit shield across his shoulder today, so he's not too far away from taking contact.

"As usual with Roger, he's pretty conscientious and does everything he needs to do to get himself back on the field."

The Blues are also without the likes of Beauden Barrett, due to concussion protocols, while All Blacks prop Nepo Laulala has been suspended for foul play.

Fellow internationals Rieko Ioane and Hoskins Sotutu will also sit out of Saturday's match due to All Blacks rest orders.
