*****

Kia ora, good evening and welcome to Newshub's live coverage of the Super Rugby Pacific clash between the Hurricanes and Reds at Melbourne's AAMI Stadium.

Fresh from a drought-breaking win over the Highlanders, the team from the capital still languish in the bottom half of the competition table and will hope to make a big run towards playoffs, as the trans-Tasman phase begins.

They only have themselves to blame for their four-win/four-loss record to date, developing a bad habit of not finishing off opponents when they have them on the ropes and leaving results to be decided on the final play of the game.

Their win over the southerners was decided by a disallowed Highlanders try at the death, but the week before, they were left protesting a referee non-call in a loss to the Crusaders. They lost in overtime to Moana Pasifika, but won their season-opener over the Blues with a try after the siren by captain Ardie Savea.

They will not want to leave the outcome that late tonight against the Reds, who trail the competition-leading Blues and Brumbies only by a bonus point, sharing their seven-win/one-loss records.

Julian Savea open to All Blacks return after outstanding Hurricanes form

While hoping for an All Blacks comeback, Hurricanes winger Julian Savea admits a lot still needs to happen, before he dons the black jersey again.

Savea has been one of the Hurricanes' form players in 2022, cementing himself as a key starter for Jason Holland's side in six of eight matches so far.

The former test winger hasn't featured for New Zealand since 2017, but before then played in 54 tests and scored 46 tries - second only to Doug Howlett for the most in the black jersey.

Since returning from French side Toulon in 2020, Savea has had to watch as the likes of Rieko Ioane, Sevu Reece, George Bridge, Will Jordan, Caleb Clarke and Braydon Ennor take their opportunities as All Blacks wingers.

Now firing on all cylinders in Super Rugby Pacific, Savea, 31, would welcome another chance, but isn't getting ahead of himself.

"One hundred percent, that's definitely something in my head anyway," Savea said. "In saying that, there's still a long way to go.

"I know the talent among the AB's there is quite huge, but I'm not focussing on the All Blacks. For me, it's just [about] consistent performances every week.

"If my head and my body's right, there's nothing I can do. I'm an old player now.

"I just go through my process each week. Whatever happens after the season will take care of itself."

Savea says his outstanding form has nothing to do with what he's doing on the field, instead crediting his success to what's happening off it.

"There's no secret to be honest, I'm just enjoying life. I think I'm in a better mental space and I've got myself in a good position in terms of my body.

"All of those combined contributed to where I am now."

Savea and the Hurricanes are currently seventh on the Super Rugby Pacific ladder after its first eight rounds, as the competition combines the New Zealand and Australian conferences starting this weekend.
