Kiwi Ryan Fox sits five shots off the leader heading into the final day of the European PGA Tour's BMW International Open in Munich.

After completing his second round to be one shot behind the leader, Fox came away with a one-under third round of 71 to sit at 15-under for the tournament.

Fox sits fourth heading into the final round overnight on Sunday (NZ time).

But things could have been so much different for Fox, after an inconsistent third round at Golfclub Munchen Eichenried.

The 35-year-old finished with seven birdies, three bogeys and a triple bogey on the par-three 12th hole.

Overnight leader Haotong Li of China extended his advantage in the third round, with six birdies and an eagle as well as three bogeys to shoot a five-under 67.

At 20-under, Li holds a three-shot lead over his closest competitor, Thomas Pieters of Belgium at 17-under.

Englishman Jordan Smith separates Fox and Pieters, while Dutchman Darius van Driel is level with Fox at 15-under before the final round.
