NZ 68 Jamaica 6

NZ - Watene-Zelezniak 4, Marshall-King 2, Smith 2, Niukore, Kris, Nicoll-Klokstad, NIkora & Hiku tries; Foran 6 conversions, Watene-Zelezniak 2 conversions

Jamaica - Jones-Bishop try; Rush conversion

Second half

40th minute - Jamaica kick early, but they get a scrum feed, when Kiwis can't gather cleanly.

From the scrum, Jamaica kick on the first tackle, but Hiku is wise to that and smothers the threat. The siren sounds and NZ have another big win, but not without some embarrassment.

39th minute - Jamaica cross halfway and win another penalty.

38th minute - Kiwis kick off long and Jamaica bring the ball back. Smith steals the ball, but is brought back for a strip in the tackle.

36th minute - TRY to Jones-Bishop

Rush throws a loopy pass to his winger, but he manages to stay in the field of play. Another bobbly kick from Rush is spilled by Smith and evades Manu, for Jones-Bishop to chase down.

Rush converts, NZ 68-6

35th minute - Jamacia are on attack again, but haven't looked likely so far.

34th minute - Jamaica gets the ball back from the kickoff, after Kiwis knock on. This is embarrassing now.

32nd minute - TRY to Smith

Kiwis tap on halfway, Smith scampers and puts Kris towards the line, then runs from dummy half to score. That looks marginal - he was held up, but somehow gets the ball down.

Foran converts, NZ 68-0

31st minute - Kiwis defence holds strong, Rush kicks across the field, but it's too shallow and NZ have it easily covered. They win a clearing penalty.

30th minute - Jamaica hot on attack and a chance to score here.

29th minute - Jamaica kick to the tryline early, but Manu has it covered. Nikora loses the ball in a tackle and captain's challenge will be employed.

Video referee rules Jamaica were simply pulling out of the tackle and not stripping, so challenge unsuccessful.

28th minute - Rush kicks off high again and Jamaica have the ball again. Jamaica go on attack.

26th minute - TRY to Smith

Fisher-Harris is stripped in a four-man tackle, so Kiwis have a penalty near the tryline. Smith runs from dummy half and stretches to score. Foran converts, NZ 62-0

25th minute - Rush kicks over the defence and Papali'i backtracks to gather. Smith and Marshall-King make metres, before offloading.

24th minute - From dummy half, Smith dummies right and tries to grubber along the ground, but easily covered by Jamaica.

23rd minute - Kiwis players are falling like flies, with DWZ joining Leota and Niukore on the sideline.

22nd minute - Kiwis have muffed that play-the-ball, so it's handed over to Jamaica in NZ territory. They make a mistake to hand it back.

21st minute - Jamaica kick off short and Manu rises high to gather it.

18th minute - TRY to Watene-Zelezniak

Jamaica drop out and the Kiwis enter the red zone again. They shift right, where Hiku holds up the pass expertly, before dishing to his winger.

DWZ went down at the end of that last run and barely made the corner to score his fourth. Looks a cramped hamstring, so Foran is back on kicking duties from the sideline... and he slots it, NZ 56-0

17th minute - Jamaica mix up their kick again and NZ scramble to keep the ball in play, but break down the right again, with Hiku and DWZ, who chips ahead. Jamaica barely cover the danger.

15th minute - TRY to Marshall-King

Kiwis prepare for the short kickoff, but Jamaica kick long and low towards the posts. NZ break quickly, with DWZ streaking down the right sideline and kicking ahead.

DWZ is taken out of play, but Marshall-King is chasing the kick - as he did in the first half - to score his second. DWZ shanks his conversion across goal, NZ 50-0

13th minute - TRY to Nikora

Kiwis shift left, where Nikora pops up at centre with the wing outside him, but he slices back against the grain to score easily himself. DWZ converts, NZ 46-0

12th minute - Rush kicks and regathers, after it deflects off NAS, but that's the end of the set.

11th minute - Jamaica are driven back from the scrum and are struggling to breach the Kiwis defence. They eventually reach halfway...

10th minute - Kiwis shift left, but Nikora has overrun Manu's pass and fumbles the ball.

Ninth minute - Jamaica aren't making much ground our of their red zone and eventually kick from deep in their half.

Eighth minute - Jamaica drop out short and Kris can't gather the ball cleanly, knocking on.

Seventh minute - Kiwis win a clearing penalty, when Manu is stripped in a two-man tackle. NAS runs strong, but Nicoll-Klokstad is driven back, when his support overruns his attempted pass.

Jamaica scramble to defuse a speculator kick.

Sixth minute - Jamaica kick high and short again, and win the ball back again. DWZ rushes out of the line on defence and Jamaica lose ground.

They chip ahead, but Nicoll-Klokstad has it covered.

Fourth minute - TRY to Nicoll-Klokstad

From the tap 10 metres out, Nicoll-Klokstad takes the first pass and has too much momentum to stop, as he falls over in a tackle to score. Sure enough, DWZ lines up the conversion and slots it, NZ 40-0

Third minute - From the scrum, Manu is wrapped up and Fisher-Harris barges up the middle. NAS rumbles towards the posts and is held up.

Second minute - Kiwis go down the right, but Hiku's pass is knocked down by Jamaica, so another set coming their way.

First minute - Kiwis kick long to start the second half and notably, DWZ was practicing his goalkicking in the break, so maybe he takes over from Foran. Woodburn-Hall kicks and Nicoll-Klokstad fields.

Halftime

40th minute - TRY to Marshall-King

Kiwis quickly clear halfway and DWZ makes metres, before kicking infield. The ball bounces into the goal area, where Marshall-King bobbles, but secures to force.

Referee Griffiths checks for offside on the kick and JMK forces just in the field of play. Foran slots the conversion, NZ 34-0

39th minute - Jamaica kick long and Manu takes in his own goal area. NAS brushes off a couple of weak tacklers...

37th minute - TRY to Kris

From the scrum, Kiwis go left, where they have an overlap, and Manu floats a pass to Kris to cross in the corner. Foran floats his conversion across goal, NZ 28-0

36th minute - Sorenson and NAS go close to scoring. The ball goes right, but Simpson deflects a pass and Kiwis will get another crack.

35th minute - From the scrum, Kiwis win a penalty for offside. Niukore is struggling and replaced by Marshall-King.

34th minute - Another high kick from Foran, but Jones-Bishop leaps to claim it. Jamaica bobble the ball forward in their own half, so another great attacking position for NZ.

33rd minute - Jamaica back on attack. Rush kicks high, but DWZ is calm underneath. Nicoll-Klokstad bursts up centrefield and Papali'i crosses halfway.

31st minute - Jamaica do the short kickoff again, but the Kiwis scramble to secure the ball. Niukore crosses halfway and Foran puts up a high kick, claimed by Jones-Bishop.

29th minute - TRY to Niukore

Jamaica kick high and Kris brings the ball back to halfway. Hiku challenges the tryline to the right and to the left, Niukore has too much strength, fending off a couple of weak tackles.

Foran slots his conversion, NZ 24-0

28th minute - From the scrum, Jamaica break out of their red zone, but they can't make halfway.

27th minute - Kiwis shift left, where Kris makes good metres. When they come right, Hiku holds up his pass and eventually Asofa-Solomona takes the tricky pass.

26th minute - Smith plays at a Jamaican offload and they get a set restart on attack. Another ealy kick deflects off Leota, who pounces on it.

25th minute - Nikora runs across field, looking for someone to run off him, but he eventually has the ball stripped and Jamaican win a penalty.

24th minute - Leota charges out of the red zone and Kris crosses halfway.

23rd minute - Lawrence taps and runs within a few metres of the line. Smith smothers a speculator kick and the threat is over.

22nd minute - Jamaica in the red zone and shift left. Fisher-Harris hits Rush with a high shot and is penalised about 10 metres out from the tryline.

21st minute - Jamaica try the high kick again and win the ball back. Kiwis need to sort that aspect of their play out quickly or everyone will do that against them.

19th minute - TRY to Watene-Zelezniak

Rush's kick is charged down in the NZ half and the Kiwis quickly break out, with the ball shifting right to DWZ, who runs 70 metres to secure his hat-trick already. Foran pulls his conversion across goal, NZ 18-0

18th minute - Manu chips over the defence, but Woodburn-Hall handles that easily.

17th minute - Jamaica kick hit and short again, but referee Griffiths calls a knockon. Golding has challenged the decision, but replays show that's a very good call from the ref.

Foran feeds the Kiwis scrum and they quickly break towards halfway. Hiku makes Jamaica territory and Manu tries to tap the ball to his outsides.

14th minute - TRY to Watene-Zelezniak

Smith breaks over halfway and when the ball shits right, DWZ bamboozles the defence with some footwork to secure his second try. Manu's fingerprints are all over that, with a long pass to create the overlap.

Foran finally finds his range with the conversion, NZ 14-0

13th minute - Jamaica easily handle that kick and break out of their red zone. Rush kicks low to touch, but he's outside his 40, so no 40-20.

12th minute - Jamaica's kickoff is a little longer this time and Nicoll-Klokstad is under it. Kiwis cross halfway quickly through Fisher-Harris and Manu threatens, before Foran chips towards the posts.

10th minute - TRY to Hiku

Kiwis run right, with Manu and Foran heading acrossfield, where Nicoll-Klokstad is the extra man and DWZ provides the final pass for his centre looming outside. Foran leaves his conversion right, NZ 8-0

Ninth minute - Jamaica have ball in hand again, but spill it in a tackle. Nikora comes away with it and Niukore crosses halfway.

Eighth minute - Another set restart for the Kiwis and Leota crosses halfway, but he has the ball stripped.

Seventh minute - Jamaica knocking on the door of the NZ red zone. Rush tries a kick, but is pressured and it's not good.

Sixth minute - Jamaica kick high and short again, and win the ball back again. They get an immediate set restart.

Fourth minute - TRY to Watene-Zelezniak

DWZ and Foran challenge the defence down the right, and NZ get a set restart. When the ball comes back right, Manu throws a long pass to DWZ, who has space to dive over in the corner.

Foran's sideline conversion hits the upright and bounces away, NZ 4-0

Third minute - Jamaica asking some good questions early, but the Kiwis have the ball for the first time and cross halfway quickly.

Second minute - Woodburn-Hall puts a little kick to the goal area and Liu is forced to knock it dead for a dropout.

Jamaica run the dropout back from halfway and put in an early kick towards the posts, but it bounces dead.

First minute - Marcus Griffiths will referee the game tonight. Jamaica go through their own pre-match ritual and they will kick off.

They try the short kickoff that troubled the Kiwis against Lebanon and Jamaica regain the ball.

7:29am - Both teams have faced their national anthems and now the Jamaicans get their first look at the Kiwis haka, led by Peta Hiku. Intriguing moment for the Caribbeans...

The Kiwis cross halfway with the haka, surely a sign of their intent tonight.

7:19am - Bad news from the NZ camp, with several players struck down ill for this match, with some changes as a result. Perhaps the biggest sees Joseph Manu moved into the halves to replace Dylan Brown, with Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad brought into fullback.

*****

Kia ora, good morning and welcome to Newshub's live coverage of the Rugby League World Cup pool match between NZ Kiwis and Jamaica at Hull's MKM Stadium.

World No.1 New Zealand opened their tournament with a scratchy win over Lebanon, allowing their opponents to score the opening tries in each half and showing only glimpses of their ability in a modest 34-12 victory.

Fullback Joseph Manu wasted no time showing his class, breaking the game open in the second half, with a try assist for half Dylan Brown and a brilliant individual effort to score himself.

In their first appearance at this level, the Jamaicans were totally outclassed 48-2 by Ireland and will need to improve vastly to press one of the tournament favourites.

Kiwis coach Michael Maguire has handed debuts to wing Sebastian Kris and second-rower Scott Sorenson, who becomes the fifth member of his family to represent New Zealand in rugby league, following in the footsteps of legendary uncles Dane and Kurt Sorenson.

Manu will wear the No.1 jersey again (although that alone is no guarantee he will play fullback, given the bizarre World Cup numbering format), while Brown and veteran Kieran Foran fill the halves, while Melbourne Storm star Jahrome Hughes recovers from injury niggles.

Join us at 7:30am Sunday morning for kickoff.

Maguire eases World Cup injury fears over star Kiwis halfback Hughes

By Stephen Foote

NZ Kiwis coach Michael Maguire has allayed fears over the fitness of star halfback Jahrome Hughes, who faces another injury-enforced absence at the Rugby League World Cup this weekend.

Hughes, 28, was scratched from the Kiwis side for their World Cup opener with a thigh strain and hasn't recovered in time to face Jamaica on Sunday.

Kieran Foran will partner Dylan Brown in the halves in Hughes' absence, as the Kiwis look to book their spot in the next round.

Hughes battled injury concern for Melbourne Storm during the NRL season, with separate shoulder and calf issues, but Maguire insists there is no link to his playmaker's fitness race in the UK.

In fact, Maguire outlines Hughes could play, if the game held more weight than a pool match.

"He should be right for next week," Maguire assured. "He's really close, but just where he had that slight strain, we wanted to take one more week and make sure that he's right.

"He should be 100 percent for next week. It's a real minor one.

"We have a good medical staff over here, obviously there's a big picture of what we're looking at.

"If it was the biggest game that we're playing this week, he'd get away with it, but we need to be smart about where we're going and what we're wanting to achieve over here.

"He'll be fine."

Maguire has also put the Kiwis on notice, after their struggles in the 34-12 opening victory over Lebanon.

The second-tier nation matched the tournament contenders blow for blow, until Joseph Manu's second-half display saw New Zealand clear.

With those lessons on board, Maguire says the Kiwis won't fall into the same mistakes, when they take the field at Hull's MKM Stadium.

"There are areas in our game last week where we didn't hit the ground running as fast as we'd have liked," he continued.

"We've got to make sure we do that against Jamaica and make a bit of a statement about how we're playing.

"It's [about] respecting the opposition and who you play every single time. You're playing for your country - every team's going to have the passion.

"You've got to make sure you're above and beyond everyone else that you're playing. That's an area that the boys have within themselves to show everyone back home what type of team we are."
