All Blacks v Wales: Sam Whitelock confirmed as All Blacks captain for rest of northern tour

Veteran lock Sam Whitelock will take over as captain for the remainder of the All Blacks' northern tour.

On Tuesday, assistant coach Jason Ryan confirmed Whitelock will replace regular skipper Sam Cane, who was forced to return to New Zealand with a fractured cheekbone suffered during the 38-31 win over Japan at Tokyo on Saturday.

Beauden Barrett and Ardie Savea have been appointed co-vice captains.

Ryan said Whitelock was the obvious choice to reprise his role as captain, after he led the All Blacks to a 40-14 victory over the Wallabies in Cane's absence in the final test of the Rugby Championship in September.

"Sam is really experienced and respected in the group," Ryan said. "He's played 100-plus test matches and experienced a lot so he's the right man for the job.

"It was pretty straightforward and really well supported by the vice-captains."

The 140-test forward didn't feature against Japan, with his departure from New Zealand delayed to attend to an inner-ear problem.

The All Blacks are due to play Wales in Cardiff on Sunday followed by tests against Scotland at Murrayfield on November 14 and England at Twickenham on November 20.

Ryan admitted his team had been given a timely "reality check" in their hard-fought win against the Brave Blossoms, when they were outplayed for large periods of the closest contest yet between the two nations.

"We were a little bit messy," Ryan said. "We didn't shy away from that [in the post-match review].

"First game in four weeks. We didn't make any excuses around that but we had some good reality checks as well.

"We know we will have to be a lot sharper for the next few weeks of what's ahead."
