Super Rugby Pacific: Hurricanes avenge historic defeat to Moana Pasifika with 50-point romp at Mt Smart Stadium

Twelve months to the day later, the Hurricanes have exorcised the demons of their historic Super Rugby loss to Moana Pasifika on the same ground, running out 59-0 winners at Auckland's Mt Smart Stadium.

Among their nine tries, winger Salesi Rayasi grabbed a brace late, as their opponents struggled to put together any meaningful attacks and expended most of their energy tackling.

The team from the capital earned a dubious place in history, when they fell to a shock defeat against the then-expansion team last season, providing Moana Pasifika with their first-ever win in the competition.

With coach Jason Holland resting key All Blacks Tyrel Lomax, Dane Coles and Jordie Barrett, the Hurricanes may have been vulnerable to another Mt Smart hijack, but they never allowed their rivals the momentum to build a challenge.

Fullback Josh Moorby had the scoreboard moving after seven minutes, when he loomed inside winger Kini Naholo for a deft touch pass to cross wide out.

Further tries to first-five Brett Cameron and halfback Cam Roigard had the visitors ahead 19-0 at halftime, and Moana Pasifika kept their opponents out for 15 minutes after the restart, before the wheels began to fall off.

Naholo powered over in three tackles, Rayasi scored his pair in quick succession, before captain Ardie Savea received an offload from brother Julian to score under the crossbar.

After a globetrotting career, hooker Hame Faiva scored a try on his debut, while promising loose forward Peter Lakai had his first Super Rugby try in the final seconds.

Moana Pasifika conceded five tries and 33 unanswered points in the final 20 minutes.

"Feeling very proud of the boys, very happy," admitted Ardie Savea. "To come here and keep Moana to zero is something very special for us.

"We're going to cherish this one. The Moana boys are physical and I was a bit nervouse before the game, because playing against the Pacific brothers is always challenging.

"I have a lot of love for the Moana brothers. I'm happy for us, but I hope tey can bounce back and do well next week."

With ACT Brumbies suffering their first loss of the season, the Hurricanes improve to second on the competition table - behind the Chiefs - and face Western Force at Palmerston North next Sunday.
