A Chinese man who threw 'lucky' coins into the engine of a plane has been fined NZ$25,727.

According to the BBC, the incident caused delays and ultimately cancelled the flight after two 1 yuan coins were found near the low-cost carrier named 'Lucky Air'.

First-time flyer Lu Chao, 28, said he had thrown the coins into the plane engine for "good luck".

Although the court procedure occurred in July last year, the decision was recently made public.

Yuan told the court that the airline should have told passengers not to throw coins into the plane engine.

This is not the first incident involving coins and aeroplanes.

In 2017, an elderly Chinese woman also threw coins into a jet's engine to ensure "good luck".

In that case, the China Southern Airlines flight from Shanghai to Guangzhou was delayed for five hours, and 150 passengers were evacuated as airline staff examined the engine.

More recently, in April 2019, a Chinese woman was detained by police after throwing six coins at an airplane.

The 66-year-old was arrested by police after admitting to the act.
