Despite several terrible reviews, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice has clobbered competition at the global box office and raked in US$424 million over its opening weekend.

The Zack Snyder comic book adaptation earned US$170 million in the North American market alone, breaking the records for best March opening (previously held by The Hunger Games), best Easter weekend opening (previously held by Fast & Furious 7) and Warner Bros' biggest opening of all time (previously held by Harry Potter And the Deathly Hallows: Part 2).

The film's cast includes Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck, who in responding to the negative reviews made for a popular recent Sad Batman meme.

Backing up the punishing reviews, the general public have also rated the film poorly, despite the massive box office takings. CinemaScore, the industry standard polling service, has shown audiences gave the film a B rating -- the same score as The Green Lantern and Catwoman.

It's a lower CinemaScore than most previous Batman and Superman films, including less popular ones like Superman Returns and Batman Forever.

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice currently has a rating of 29 percent on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes and 44 percent on Metacritic.
