Golden Globes 2017: red carpet fashion gallery

The 74th annual Golden Globes kicked off awards season at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles this afternoon (NZ time).

While the focus of the nominees would have been fixed on those trophies, the eyes of the rest of the world were on the red carpet outfits. This year brought some of the boldest looks we've seen at the Golden Globes to date.

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds

With Brangelina out of the picture (RIP) these two have stepped forward to take their rightful place as King and Queen of Hollywood. Blake looks perfectly regal in a floor length black gown, with a stand-out gold neckline. While it could be a little heavy without the right styling, her slicked back bun and minimal jewellery means it all just works. I can’t figure out which is the better accessory; that fat emerald on one arm, or Ryan Reynolds on the other. His paired back black tux is cut to perfection, offset by his smug smile. But wouldn’t you have one as well?

Emma Stone

Emma Stone can do no wrong in my eyes. The star looks fabulous covered in stars. The blush tones look incredible with her flawless skin and red hair, yet again proving that tired old fashion ‘rules’ are there to be broken. One of the only stars who hasn’t gone for a smoky eye, she looks fresh and flawless. In the words of our Newshub entertainment queen Kate Roger, "YES. JUST… YES".

Sarah Jessica Parker

Oh Sarah. This is like that time in Sex and the City  when you wore a white waistcoat, jeans and a pink shirt and nobody could understand why, but we pretended to like it because it was 2002 and we thought maybe it was edgy. But this is worse because you chose this. From top to toe this is the worst thing I've ever seen. Where to begin - the eyes are so dark they look like they've seen the soul of Satan? The off-the-shoulder bridal tent you could take freedom camping? (You could sleep inside the sleeves.) I'm so sorry Queen SJP, please forgive me for the sacrilege, but this is one of those times where someone who loves you should not have let you out of the limo.

Gal Gadot

ATTENTION NATALIE PORTMAN: This is how you do red carpet maternity style. Gal Gadot looks radiant as she embraces her growing bump on the red carpet. The Wonder Woman star has embraced, rather than tried to shroud, her baby-bump in a figure-hugging black dress. The silver sequinned detailing perfectly frames her pregnant stomach. Gadot has let her outfit do the talking, teaming it with a slicked back pony tail and paired back makeup. GG no longer stands for Golden Globes, it stands for Gal Gadot.

Sophia Vergara

Thank god for Sophia Vergara. Even after the year of shocking political turmoil, natural disaster and tragic celebrity loss that we’ve had, one thing you can always count on is that Sophia Vergara will turn up to awards season and making every other woman in the universe feel insecure and frumpy. Wearing a beautiful gold and silver embroidered gown that hugs her in all the right places, the Modern Family actress is outshining everyone on the red carpet. The bare shoulders and pulled-back ponytail adds just enough point of difference, but still accompanied by Vergara’s trademark sparkling diamond earrings.

Donald Glover

Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, has arrived on the red carpet in a brown velvet suit, teamed with a burgundy bow-tie. While I absolutely have to give double thumbs up to a man making an effort on the red carpet, and not going for the James Bond-esque tux we’ve seen approximately 10000 times, this one just misses the mark. When the bright lights hit the creases in the velvet, it just looks like he needs a bloody good iron and the colour is reminiscent of a 1940s school uniform.

Natalie Portman

If Natalie Portman was a New Zealander I would assume she was paying a witty homage to the 2016 national Gloriavale obsession. As she isn’t, I can’t think of any excuse for this gown. The silver detailing applied awkwardly three-quarters down the dress teamed with a high neckline means the star is drowning in this mustard coloured sack. While a certain amount of leeway has to be given to the seven-months-pregnant star, the 2014 Golden Globes showed us how stars can team baby-bumps and fashion successfully. Not good Natalie, not good at all.

Mandy Moore

One of the first celebrities to hit the red carpet, Mandy Moore was turning heads in a floor length black gown with a neckline that drops to the naval. The bold gown was softened by chiffon cape detailing on the shoulders. Teamed with a smoky eye, this look is giving me life. How many 10/10 awards can I hand out today, because this is the first off the bat.

Emily Ratajkowski

Emily Ratajkowski has arrived on the red carpet appropriately looking somewhat like a Golden Globe award, albeit the sexiest Golden Globe of all time. While your Grandmother might tell you not to mix gold and silver, you can show her this photo of Ratajowski as proof that done right, it works brilliantly. Not sure what your Grandmother will say about the thigh-high split, but personally I love it.

Kristen Bell

Kristen Bell is another celebrity that has turned to a plunging neckline as the star player of her outfit. However, it pains me to say that this is an unsuccessful look. The severe square neckline, teamed with a long sleeve, dark eye and heavy cuff are all just too much on the petite blonde. She has instantly aged about 30 years. Where’s the whimsical, fun Kristen we know and love?
