Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi

The official title for the next Star Wars film has been revealed: The Last Jedi.

Written and directed by Rian Johnson, the sequel to 2014's The Force Awakens is set for a North American release on December 15, which likely means a December 14 release in New Zealand.

The Last Jedi was revealed as the title early Tuesday morning (NZ time) on official Star Wars social media accounts.

"We have the greatest fans in this or any other galaxy. In appreciation of the fans, we wanted them to be the first to know the title of the next chapter in the Skywalker saga," said Lucasfilm.

A plot synopsis has not been revealed and fans are speculating on what to read into the title.

Some clues being talked about are Yoda using the phrase "the last Jedi" in Return of the Jedi, and the phrase being used in the opening crawl of The Force Awakens. There is also a comic book of the same name, written by Mike W Barr.

New cast members include Benicio Del Toro, Laura Dern, and Kelly Marie Tran.
