Actors Robbie Sheehan and Ronan Raftery have been cast in Mortal Engines, the latest film which will be produced and co-written by Sir Peter Jackson, spearheaded by Universal and MRC.

Sheehan is known for starring in Fortitude and will take a lead role, while Raftery, from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, will play a supporting role, Variety reported.

Mortal Engines is an adaptation of Philip Reeve's acclaimed novel series, set in a distant future where Earth's cities roam the globe on huge wheels, devouring each other in a struggle for ever diminishing resources.

Recently a casting call was put out for a large number of Wellingtonians to star as extras in the film, and the production company was overwhelmed with keen applicants.

Sir Peter is co-writing the film with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, and Christian Rivers will direct.

Rivers has said that the story was made for the big screen and is "a fantastical, futuristic world that has to be seen to be believed".

"At its heart though, it's a beautiful love story and a richly complex character driven adventure. To be the director who gets to bring Philip Reeve's incredible universe to life is a dream come true."
