Canterbury security guard Doug Roake jailed for crime spree

A Canterbury man has been sentenced to 13 years and eight months prison for multiple charges, including shooting two women.

Doug Roake, 23, pleaded guilty to six charges of aggravated robbery, two of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and two of presenting a firearm.

Two months before the first robberies, Roake had worked as a security guard at the Wanaka wedding of former All Black captain Richie McCaw and Black Stick Gemma McCaw (nee Flynn).

His sentence, handed down in the Christchurch District Court on Thursday, carries a minimum non-parole period of six-and-a-half years.

Roake was charged after robbing five Canterbury pubs at gunpoint over March and April, making off with $115,000 in cash. He also shot two women during a home invasion in Rolleston.

Judge Jane Farrish said Roake left the two women "gravely injured".

In January, Roake had been employed to work for Auckland-based security company Platform 4 Group at the celebrity-studded McCaw wedding.

On the day of the wedding, Roake was part of a large security team which followed media up a hill overlooking the venue. Guards said they'd been told to obstruct the view of camera lenses using umbrellas and jackets.
