Truck driver suspended pending investigation

The man behind the wheel of a trailer truck filmed driving on the other side of the road while heading north on State Highway 1 just outside Dunedin over Labour weekend has been suspended.

Video provided to Newshub showed the truck crossing the centre line a number of times before finally ending up on the other side of the road while cars can be seen oncoming just moments before.

The truck belongs to Big Chill Distribution, a freight company that delivers around the country, and a spokesman confirmed that the incident was under investigation.

"We are presently undertaking a full investigation on the matter, and this will take a number of days to be closed out," the spokesman says.

"Whilst this process is undertaken, the driver concerned has been suspended, on full pay, from his duties."

Police say they are also investigating and urge motorists to continue to "report any driving behaviour of this nature."

Over Labour weekend the holiday road death toll climbed from three in 2016 to five over the same period this year.

Two people were killed in a crash in Auckland, one woman died on State Highway 47 on Saturday morning, another person was killed near Burnham outside Christchurch on Friday night and a cyclist died following a crash in Rangiora on Monday night.
