It's time to spring into action if you want to ensure your relatives have something to open on Christmas Day.

Wednesday is the cut-off for nationwide courier postage, and New Zealand Post is gearing up for its busiest holiday period yet - estimating it will process more than 41 million letters and parcels.

Chief operating officer Mark Stewart says they're well-prepared to handle the influx of gifts, employing an additional 600 staff, over 200 more vans and 13 line-haul trucks.

"It is a major undertaking."

Mr Stewart says the huge increase in online shopping is responsible for making the busiest time of year even busier.

"This will be about 20 percent up on last year, and that's purely driven by New Zealanders going crazy with online shopping - both New Zealand retailers and also from international websites."

While extra services are on call to handle the influx, Mr Stewart says people also need to do their bit in order to ensure everything runs smoothly.

"[People] can send as early as possible and also make sure they've got the right address details on there, including your postcode.

"Those are a couple of things people can do to give themselves the best shot of their present or card getting there on time."
