Man run over after surviving initial Canterbury car crash named

A man who survived a car crash but got hit moments later by another vehicle in Canterbury on Wednesday has been named as 31-year-old Michael Gardiner.

The Christchurch local's family has been notified of his death, and police have extended their sympathies to all his loved ones.

The tragic incident occurred at 11:30pm on Wednesday night, on Leeston Rd in the rural township of Springston.

Mr Gardiner was involved in an initial crash near Goulds Rd, which saw he and another occupant trapped in a ditch.

When Mr Gardiner attempted to climb out of the ditch, he was struck by another vehicle travelling down Leeston Rd and later died.

Canterbury Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
