Emergency services rushed to an Auckland scrap yard fire overnight that briefly caused disruptions to train services.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) told Newshub the blaze occurred at a scrap yard on Saleyards Rd in the Auckland suburb of Ōtāhuhu at 10:07pm on Saturday evening.

FENZ Northern Communication Centre Shift Manager Michael Anderson said FENZ received multiple calls about a "large fire".

FENZ responded with eight fire trucks, three ladder trucks, three specialist trucks including a command unit and multiple specialist appliances.

When crews arrived at the scene, they found the fire "well ablaze" and it was quickly upgraded to a third alarm.

Anderson confirmed to Newshub the fire has now been extinguished and a fire investigator will be arriving at the scene later on Sunday.

One truck currently remains at the scene to monitor hotspots, Anderson said.

During the blaze, firefighters wore breathing apparatus and nearby residents were told to keep doors and windows closed because of the smoke.

Anderson confirmed there were no injuries or damage to property to report.

Anderson told Newshub he was aware train services on the Southern Line were briefly suspended but have now resumed and referred all questions on this to Auckland Transport and KiwiRail.

KiwiRail spokesman Britton Broun told Newshub the fire caused very minor disruption to train services on the Southern Line on Saturday night.

Broun said FENZ asked KiwiRail to turn off the overhead power lines on the outer part of the Southern Line between 10:40pm and 11:40pm.

This saw trains briefly disrupted for about an hour on the Southern Line but all services are now back to normal, Broun told Newshub.

Police told Newshub they were alerted to the blaze but referred all questions to FENZ.

Newshub has contacted KiwiRail for more information.
