New Zealand's second IMAX cinema will open later this year more than 20 years after the first opened in Auckland.

Event Cinemas has announced it is bringing an IMAX with Laser experience to the redevelopment of the Queensgate shopping centre in Lower Hutt, set to open in December.

The location will feature seven screens in total including VMAX, fully reclining seats and double daybeds, as well as a new gaming arcade.

Event Cinemas said the IMAX with Laser cinema will feature "a ground-breaking 4K laser projection system that features a new optical engine, custom designed lenses, and a suite of proprietary technology that delivers brighter images with increased resolution, deeper contrast, and the widest range of colours exclusively to IMAX screens".

Currently, New Zealand's only IMAX cinema is located in Auckland in the Queen Street Event cinemas, which first opened in 1999.

Event Cinemas Queensgate will reopen to coincide with the release of James Cameron's Avatar: The Way of the Water, which is due to open on December 15.

Event Cinemas General Manager for Entertainment New Zealand Carmen Switzer says the move in Lower Hutt is "incredibly exciting."

“We are looking forward to welcoming back movie lovers to Lower Hutt and the surrounding regions," she said.

"The introduction of IMAX with Laser to Wellington is incredibly exciting. We don’t believe in a one-experience-fits-all approach to our cinemas or our customers."
