Christchurch AirBnB stabbing: Victim's family thanks community, police have 'clear picture' of events

Christchurch police say they now have a "clear picture" of the events surrounding a fatal stabbing at an AirBnB on Friday.

Zion Purukamu, 16, was killed and two other people were hospitalised after a stabbing at a property on Medbury Tce in Fendalton at about 10:30pm.

Around 80 young people attended the party in the three-bedroom house which was rented by two people for the night - and alcohol was involved.

Detective inspector Michael Ford revealed on Monday police investigators have made positive progress with their enquiries.

"Thanks to the large number of cooperative people who've come forward, we're confident we have a clear picture of what happened that night on Medbury Terrace," he said.

Investigators also received CCTV footage and cellphone photos which they are in the process of reviewing.

"We would like to thank all of those people who acted on our request for information. This has proved to be extremely valuable."

Medbury Terrace is still cordoned off as of Monday morning, as police finish the scene examination.

Updates and support are also being provided to Purukamu's family and the whānau of the other victims.

Police also released a message on behalf of Purukamu's family thanking the wider Christchurch community for "the support and aroha they have shown" over the weekend.

"This continues to be an extremely difficult time for them as they plan ahead for Zion's funeral on Friday.

"At this time, they are requesting privacy to focus their efforts on the funeral preparations."

Anyone with information in relation to the stabbing is asked to call 105, quoting Operation Medbury, or call anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
