Convicted murderer Jeremy Powell tells court he killed Angela Blackmoore to impress his girlfriend

Convicted murderer Jeremy Powell has told the High Court he killed Angela Blackmoore to impress his then girlfriend, Rebecca Wright-Meldrum.

Wright-Meldrum is on trial alongside David Hawken for their alleged role in the 1995 killing.

For a second day the convicted killer was called as a witness against Hawken and Wright-Meldrum and chose not to be filmed.

Under cross-examination, the defence counsel argued inconsistencies in Powell's evidence - specifically over who decided to use a bat in the murder.

"What's the truth, Mr Powell?" asked Anne Stevens KC, Hawken's defence lawyer.

"I honestly don’t know," he replied.

The Crown alleges Hawken ordered Powell to carry out Blackmoore's 1995 murder and Wright-Meldrum used her friendship to gain access to the house.

But the defence challenged that theory.

"I suggest if you knocked on Angela Blackmoore's door, she would let you in as Rebecca's friend," Stevens KC put forward.

"No," Powell said.

The court heard following forensic examination, video titles of deleted videos, including pornography of men inflicting violence on women, were found on Powell's devices.

He denies being a sadist and claims he never viewed the material.

Powell also told the court his two hard drives and computer were bought second-hand.

"When did you come up with that answer, Mr Powell? Just now?" Stevens KC asked.

"That’s just the truth," he said.

Meanwhile, Wright-Meldrum's counsel painted a picture of Powell being a liar.

"You told a lie in 1995 and you kept basically lying until 2019?" asked defence counsel Philip Shamy.

"Correct," Powell responded.

It was in a 2019 interview when Powell told police Hawken and Wright-Meldrum were involved.

Powell claims he was trying to impress Wright-Meldrum, whom he was dating at the time.

"Does she say to you that you can impress me by murdering my friend, Angela Blackmoore?" Shamy asked Powell.

"Not in those words but yes," he said.

The Crown is expected to call its final witnesses next week.
