Ponsonby Road shooting as it happened: A timeline of key events

What began as the tragic death of a man shot dead in Auckland's Ponsonby last week has ended in a major police breakthrough.

Police confirmed on Wednesday that the man wanted in relation to the shooting, Hone Kay-Selwyn, was found dead at a rural property near Taupō.

The suspected gunman's death was an unexpected turn in a police homicide investigation that's had Kiwis on the edge of their seats.

This is how the shooting unfolded:

Sunday May 5

Hone Kay-Selwyn, 31, is on Ponsonby Road and attempts to get inside a bar.

He is refused entry due to closing hours and walks down the street.

CCTV footage shows him wearing a manbag, where police say the gun was likely hiding.

10:15pm

A group of four people exit a parked car on Ponsonby Rd and walk in Kay-Selwyn's direction.

He then shoots at one man in the group several times and kills him.

Kay-Selwyn walks away from the scene after the shooting and heads south towards Richmond Rd.

He speaks to someone on the phone and glances back at the scene.

10:18pm

Emergency Services receive reports of a firearms incident on Ponsonby Rd.

The victim's body is discovered on a pavement near Chapel Bar & Bistro.

A white sheet is put over the body and a police cordon is put in place.

Armed police patrol the area overnight and block off traffic.

Police launch a homicide investigation into the shooting.

"Our investigation is now in the early stages to determine the full circumstances of what has occurred," Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Bolton, Auckland City CIB says.

12:30pm

Detective Inspector Chris Barry speaks to media at the corner of Ponsonby Road and Anglesea Street with updates on the investigation.

He releases images of the suspect and warns he is "extremely dangerous".

Kay-Selwyn has short dark hair, a moustache and a beard along his jawline.

A large tattoo on his left forearm appears to read "Forever".

4:39pm

Police lift cordons in the area and Ponsonby Road reopens to traffic.

They confirm the investigation is developing and urge the public to provide footage of the events.

Tuesday May 7

Police reveal Kay-Selwyn's name and his age to the public.

A warrant is issued for his arrest for the unlawful possession of a firearm.

"We are reiterating that Kay-Selwyn is considered dangerous and should not be approached," Det Insp Barry says.

He adds the investigation is progressing.
