A quick-fire innings by wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi and four wickets to Nathan McCullum have helped the Black Caps to an 81-run win over the West Indies in the opening Twenty20 cricket international.

The tourists, chasing 190 for victory in Auckland on Saturday night, limped to 108-8.

The result was a big turnaround from the mammoth 203-run defeat the Black Caps suffered in the final one-dayer between the sides in Hamilton on Wednesday.

But the West Indies couldn't repeat their batting performance, with Andre Fletcher's 23 their best score, while the home side tightened up their bowling.

Black Caps seamer Adam Milne showed plenty of express pace and one 150km/h ball claimed the scalp of opener Lendl Simmons, caught behind for a duck.

Jimmy Neesham chipped in with a tidy 3-16, but it was McCullum who did the main damage.

McCullum celebrated his 50th appearance in a T20 with 4-24 and he was aided by some excellent catching.

Earlier, Ronchi produced his highest T20 score of 48 as New Zealand reached a competitive 189-5.

Ronchi's runs came in 25 balls and overshadowed skipper Brendon McCullum's 60 in their unbeaten 85-run partnership.

The pair came together at 104-5 in the 13th over and after seamer Tino Best had grabbed two wickets in four balls.

They set about lifting the run-rate, with Ronchi the more aggressive.

The former Australia representative hit seven boundaries, including four sixes, two of which came in a haul of 22 runs from one Sunil Narine over.

Brendon McCullum brought up his half-century in the final over when he smacked a Best delivery for six over mid-wicket.

He cleared the rope again with the next ball, paddling it over the short boundary behind him.

The Windies end their tour of New Zealand with the second T20 in Wellington on Wednesday night.
